Uprising

Uprising, a 345 page book by Margaret Peterson Haddix, is a about threes girls, Bella, an Italian immigrant, Yetta, a Russian Jewish immigrant, and Jane, a rich girl from America, caught in a fire that changed America. Bella and Yetta work at a place called Triangle Shirtwaist Factory and go on strike. Jane and her high society "friends" drive past their strike; long-story short, Jane becomes friends with Bella and Yetta after ahe ran away from home. While in the factory someone was smoking and there cigarette ended up in a pile of fabric scraps and that one little spark became monsterous and spread to the nineth and tenth floor. Yetta and Bella survived, but Jane ended up getting trapped by the fire and was burned alive!

Back in the early 1900's trying to survive wasn't all that easy. That's where the story took place, in New York city between 1909-March 25, 1911. Uprising is about three girls just trying to survive...in more ways then one. The best audience for this book is fifth grade and older because you need to be mature to read it because of all the sadness.
I would recommend this book because this book teaches you that you should never hold a grudge because you never which breath is your last. One example of that is Yetta. Yetta got angry with her sister because her sister got married and had a baby. Then, Yetta got caught in the fire and had to jump out of the building, and while she was in the air she started to regret refusing to see her sister and always being mad. Another example is Jane. Jane ran away from home because she figured out her father was the one who hired people to beat up the strikers (aka Bella and Yetta). She refused to ever go back there again, and since she stayed with her friends, she was killed by the fire. Even though she died she died fighing for what was right.

This a great book to read!! I recommend it to all who are mature and understand how tragic this time was!
